Europop

shimmeringeuphoricmelancholic100–130 BPM

Lush, harmony-driven European pop with disco pulse and analog synths.

History

Europop grew up in continental Europe as pop engineered for instant recall: polished production, simple melodies that stick on the first listen, choruses repeated until they cannot be shaken off, and light lyrics. Through the 1970s and early 1980s such groups were popular mainly on the continent. The big exception was Sweden's ABBA, active from 1972 to 1983 and still seen as the style's leading act, who landed twenty top 10 singles and nine chart-topping albums in the UK alone and also conquered North America and Australia. A striking share of Europop stars came from Sweden, though France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands supplied plenty too. The style topped charts through the 1980s and 1990s, and in the late 1980s and early 1990s Roxette carried it to American mainstream audiences while it fed heavily into eurodance. Its polish shaped a generation of 1990s pop: Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Aqua, Steps and DJ BoBo all carry its mark. Italy's Eiffel 65 stayed active in the style into the early 2000s, and Germany's Cascada became one of its most popular faces during that decade.
