History
Ace of Base is a Swedish pop group formed in Gothenburg in 1990 by siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren together with Ulf Ekberg, who joined after stepping in for a stage-frightened bandmate at a club gig. The group started out as the darker, industrial-leaning Tech Noir before shifting toward reggae-tinged Euro-dance pop and taking the name Ace of Base. Their demo was rejected by ABBA's label Polar Records but picked up by Denmark's Mega Records, and producer Denniz Pop then helped turn “All That She Wants” into a worldwide hit. Their 1992 debut album, released internationally as The Sign, sold more than 20 million copies, spent six weeks at No. 1 in the US, and was named the best-selling debut album of all time by Guinness World Records. It produced three US No. 1 singles - “All That She Wants,” “The Sign,” and “Don't Turn Around” - and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album. Ace of Base remains the third best-selling Swedish act in history, after ABBA and Roxette.
