History
Desireless is the stage name of French singer Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop, born 25 December 1952 in Paris. After working as a fashion designer in the early 1970s, she began singing with jazz, new wave, and R&B bands in the early 1980s. In 1983 she met composer-producer Jean-Michel Rivat, who had previously written for Joe Dassin and France Gall. In 1986, Rivat and Dominique Dubois wrote her signature song, "Voyage Voyage," a synth-pop track that became a rare international breakthrough for French-language pop: it hit number one in Germany, Spain, Norway, and Sweden, and reached number two in the UK. The accompanying video was directed by Bettina Rheims and gave her a deliberately androgynous, spiky-haired look compared at the time to Annie Lennox and Grace Jones. Her stage name is said to have been inspired by a trip to India and its philosophy of acceptance. Follow-up singles "John" (1987) and "Qui Sommes Nous" (1990) kept her on French charts, and she has continued releasing music since, including a collaboration with Antoine Aureche starting in 2012.
