History
Baltimora was an Italian Italo disco project formed in Milan in early 1984 by producer and musician Maurizio Bassi together with Irish singer, dancer and actor Jimmy McShane, from Derry, Northern Ireland, who fronted the act. The group is best remembered for its 1985 single "Tarzan Boy," a worldwide hit that topped charts in several countries and remains a staple of eighties pop culture, though outside Italy Baltimora is often labeled a one-hit wonder. In Italy and parts of Europe, the follow-up single "Woody Boogie" charted the same year. Their debut album, Living in the Background, was released in Europe in late 1985 and in the US in 1986, peaking at only number 49 there. One notable piece of trivia: the band's name reportedly came from McShane closing his eyes and pointing at random on a map of the United States, landing on Baltimore, with the final letter changed to "a" for a more Italian-sounding name. Bassi disbanded the group in 1987 after it failed to produce another major hit, and McShane later died in 1995.
