History
Purity Ring is a Canadian electropop duo from Edmonton, Alberta, formed in 2010 by multi-instrumentalist/producer Corin Roddick and vocalist Megan James, who had both played in the band Gobble Gobble before splitting off to record the track "Ungirthed" together. Their sound blends synth-pop, dream pop, trip hop and witch house elements, built on heavily side-chained production, distorted vocal loops, and James's soft, macabre lyrics; the pair call their own style "future pop." Signed to 4AD, they released the acclaimed debut album Shrines in 2012 (US Billboard 200 No. 32, shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize), followed by Another Eternity (2015), Womb (2020), the Graves EP (2022), and the self-titled Purity Ring (2025). They have collaborated repeatedly with rapper Danny Brown and co-wrote and produced three songs on Katy Perry's 2017 album Witness. A neat piece of trivia: their track "Grandloves," from Shrines, was sampled by Playboi Carti on "Fell In Luv."
