History
One Way is an American R&B and funk band from Detroit, Michigan, formed in the mid-1970s by vocalist Al Hudson with guitarist Dave Roberson and bassist Kevin McCord. The group started out as Al Hudson and the Soul Partners, cutting singles for Atco before moving to ABC Records and releasing albums such as Especially for You (1977) and Spreading Love (1978). When ABC merged into MCA in 1979, the band restyled itself One Way featuring Al Hudson, and singer Alicia Myers joined for the R&B hit "You Can Do It." Through the early-to-mid 1980s, with Candyce Edwards as female lead, One Way became a fixture on the R&B charts, scoring five top-10 hits, led by "Cutie Pie" (1982), which reached number 4 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart. Other well-known tracks include "Music," "Push," and "Mr. Groove." After a 31-year recording hiatus, the band released a new album, New Old School, in 2019 — a rare example of a 1970s funk act still actively releasing music decades later.
