History
Sheila E. (born Sheila Cecilia Escovedo, 1957, in Oakland, California) is an American percussionist, drummer, and singer rooted in funk, R&B, and Latin-influenced pop. She grew up in a musical family: her father is percussionist Pete Escovedo (Santana, Azteca), her uncle was Coke Escovedo, and her godfather was Tito Puente. After years as a touring and session percussionist through the 1970s, she connected with Prince, who produced her 1984 solo debut The Glamorous Life. Its title track reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the dance chart, earning two Grammy and three MTV Award nominations. Prince made her the opening act on his Purple Rain tour, and from 1987 to 1989 she served as his drummer and musical director on the Sign o' the Times, Black Album, and Lovesexy projects. Beyond Prince, she has recorded or toured with George Duke, Marvin Gaye, Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé, earning the nickname "Queen of Percussion." In 2014 she published a memoir, The Beat of My Own Drum.
