History
Klymaxx formed in Los Angeles in 1979, assembled by drummer-vocalist Bernadette Cooper as an all-female funk and R&B outfit in which every member actually played her own instrument, a rarity at the time. Dick Griffey signed the group to SOLAR Records in 1981 after hearing the Cooper/Cheryl Cooley original "Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman." Early lineups included Cooper, Cooley on guitar, and Joyce "Fenderella" Irby on bass, alongside several other players who rotated through the band. Their breakthrough came with 1984's platinum album Meeting in the Ladies Room, which produced the top-ten R&B hits "The Men All Pause" and its title track; Cooper reportedly wrote "The Men All Pause" lyrics in about an hour. The 1985 ballad "I Miss You" became their biggest crossover success, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and going gold. Klymaxx was active through 1989, with later reunion attempts, and is remembered as one of the few self-contained all-female bands of the era to write, play, and produce its own material.
