History
The Time is an American funk rock band formed in Minneapolis in 1981. Prince assembled the group under a clause in his Warner Bros. contract that let him build and produce outside acts, using an existing local band, Flyte Tyme, as its core. Fronted by singer Morris Day, the lineup featured Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and hype man Jerome Benton. On the debut album Prince himself played nearly every instrument, crediting production to his alter ego "Jamie Starr," with Day singing his guide vocals note for note. The band scored R&B hits including "Cool," "Get It Up," "777-9311," "Jungle Love" and "The Bird," and appeared in Prince's 1984 film Purple Rain. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis later became one of the most successful production duos in pop and R&B history. The Time reunited for the 2008 Grammy Awards, later touring as the Original 7ven, and hold a star on the exterior of Minneapolis's First Avenue nightclub.
