History
Slave was an American funk band formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 1975 by trumpeter Steve Washington and trombonist Floyd Miller. The original lineup also included saxophonist Tom Lockett Jr., keyboardist Carter Bradley, bassist Mark Adams, guitarists Mark "Drac" Hicks and Danny Webster, saxophonist Orion Wilhoite, and drummer Tim Dozier. Signed to Cotillion Records, the band broke through in 1977 with the single "Slide," which topped the Billboard R&B chart and helped their self-titled debut album go gold. In 1978 drummer Steve Arrington joined, along with vocalists Starleana Young and Curt Jones and keyboardist Ray Turner; Arrington soon became lead vocalist and drove further R&B top-ten hits, including "Just a Touch of Love" (1979), "Watching You" (1980), and "Snap Shot" (1981), while the 1980 album Stone Jam also went gold. Several members left in 1981 to form the group Aurra, and Arrington departed in 1982 to launch Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame. Slave kept recording, with diminishing chart success, into the mid-1990s, moving through Atlantic and Ichiban Records before disbanding around 1996.
