History
The group grew out of Dayton, Ohio, where it had started in the late 1950s as the Ohio Untouchables and backed the Falcons on record. By the early 1970s the line-up around guitarist and singer Leroy 'Sugarfoot' Bonner, saxophonist Clarence Satchell and bassist Marshall Jones had settled into a thick, greasy funk built on clavinet, wah guitar and horns punching on the offbeat. Skin Tight (1974) opened the run. Fire (1974) and Honey (1975) both went to number one in America, and so did the singles 'Fire' and 'Love Rollercoaster'. Junie Morrison, who wrote and arranged much of the early Mercury material, left to join Funkadelic. The albums are remembered for their covers as well, which get discussed more often than the tracklists. The rhythm section's habit of leaving air between hits made the catalogue a standing supply line for hip-hop producers.
