History
Kool & the Gang is an American funk, soul, and R&B group formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, when a group of school friends began playing together as an instrumental jazz outfit called the Jazziacs. After cycling through names including the New Dimensions and Kool & the Flames, the band settled on Kool & the Gang and signed to De-Lite Records in 1967, releasing its self-titled debut album in 1969. Founding members included brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell (later known as Khalis Bayyan), Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, Robert "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, and George "Funky" Brown. Their commercial breakthrough came with 1973's Wild and Peaceful, featuring the hits "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging." A second peak followed from 1979 to 1986, after singer James "J.T." Taylor and producer Eumir Deodato joined the fold, yielding "Ladies Night" and the signature anthem "Celebration." The band has sold more than 70 million albums, won a Grammy for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. "Jungle Boogie" later found new life on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack in 1994.
