History
Hot Chocolate were a British soul band that kept finding the exact point where soul meets pop, and stayed there for well over a decade. Errol Brown's voice carries the records, light and slightly grainy, never straining, phrasing behind the beat in a way that makes even a fast track feel relaxed. The band was mixed-race at a time when that was rare on British television, and they charted consistently through the 1970s and into the 1980s, a run few acts of any kind managed. "You Sexy Thing" is the one everybody knows, built on a bassline and a falsetto hook, and it has outlived its era through films and adverts. "Every 1's a Winner" shows the other instinct: a thick, fuzzed guitar riff driving a groove that sits closer to funk rock than to disco. "It Started with a Kiss" is the ballad side, plain and unhurried. Behind the hits was steady songwriting from within the band rather than material handed to them.
