History

Jun Seba worked in Tokyo, ran the Shibuya record shop Guinness Records and the Hyde Out Productions label, and recorded as Nujabes, his own name reversed. His music sits on the seam between hip-hop and jazz: acoustic piano and upright bass cut from old pressings, harp and flute figures, drums kept soft and swung rather than hard. Metaphorical Music (2003) and Modal Soul (2005) hold most of that sound. Rappers pass through the tracks rather than lead them: Shing02 on the long-running Luv(sic) series, Substantial, Cise Starr, Uyama Hiroto on saxophone and production of his own. In 2004 he shared the Samurai Champloo soundtrack with Fat Jon, Force of Nature and Tsutchie, and that series carried the music to a large audience outside Japan. He died in a traffic accident in Tokyo on 26 February 2010, at thirty-six. The endless calm beat streams that fill study playlists today grew almost entirely out of the template he left.
