History
Loyle Carner (born Benjamin Gerard Coyle-Larner, October 6, 1994, in Lambeth, South London) is a British hip-hop artist whose stage name is a spoonerism of his surname. Raised in South Croydon, he attended the Brit School and began releasing music in the early 2010s, earning an early boost from friends King Krule and Rejjie Snow, which led to a 2012 support slot for MF Doom in Dublin. His sound blends intentional, poetic rap flows with warm, jazzy production echoing 1990s acid jazz and hip-hop. His debut album, Yesterday's Gone (2017), dealt with grief and coming of age and was nominated for the Mercury Prize; he followed it with Not Waving, but Drowning (2019), hugo (2022, also Mercury-nominated, featuring the Madlib-produced "Georgetown"), and Hopefully! (2025). Carner is openly dyslexic and has ADHD, and runs a cooking school for children with ADHD called Chilli Con Carner. He has received an honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London and multiple Brit Award nominations.
