History
Isaiah Rashad Joel McClain, born May 16, 1991, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter active since the late 2000s. He co-founded the Chattanooga hip-hop collective TheHouse and first drew national attention touring with Juicy J, Joey Bada$$, and Smoke DZA on the 2012 Smoker's Club Tour. In 2013 he signed with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), joining a Carson, California roster that included Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock, and made his national TV debut in the label's cypher at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards. His 2014 debut EP, Cilvia Demo, entered the Billboard 200 and helped land him in XXL's 2014 Freshman Class alongside Chance the Rapper. The 2016 album The Sun's Tirade peaked at No. 17 on the same chart. After a joint venture with Warner Records, he released the major-label album The House Is Burning in 2021, and, following a five-year gap, a third album, It's Been Awful, in May 2026. His music is known for a woozy, Southern-inflected sound and lyrics dealing with depression, addiction, and family, drawing on influences from OutKast and Scarface to Erykah Badu.
