History
Noname, born Fatimah Nyeema Warner on September 18, 1991, in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, is an American rapper, singer, and poet blending hip hop with jazz rap and neo soul. She started as a teenage slam poet, placing third at Chicago's Louder Than a Bomb competition, and befriended fellow local artist Chance the Rapper at the YOUMedia project. Her 2013 guest verse on Chance's mixtape Acid Rap brought her wider attention. She originally performed as "Noname Gypsy" before dropping the second word in 2016 over its offensive connotation. That year she self-released her acclaimed debut mixtape Telefone, and in 2018 followed it with the album Room 25, which Pitchfork named Best New Music and Rolling Stone called the work of "one of the best rappers alive." She is one third of the group Ghetto Sage with rappers Smino and Saba, and has run the Noname Book Club, spotlighting radical texts by authors of color, since 2019. After a hiatus, she returned in 2023 with the album Sundial, whose lead single featured Jay Electronica and sparked controversy over his associations.
