History

Modjo was a French house duo formed in Paris in 1999 by producer Romain Tranchart (b. 1976) and singer Yann Destal, born Yann Destagnol (b. 1978). Tranchart grew up in Algeria, Mexico and Brazil before returning to Paris, where he learned jazz guitar and released a 1998 solo single as Funk Legacy, citing Daft Punk and DJ Sneak among his influences; Destagnol grew up on the Beatles, the Beach Boys, David Bowie and Queen. Together they blended French house, nu-disco and alternative dance. Their 2000 breakthrough single "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)" topped the UK and Swiss charts, went platinum in both countries, and won the 2001 International Dance Music Award for Best House/Garage 12". Modjo also won Best French Act at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards. The follow-up singles "Chillin'" and "No More Tears", plus the 2001 album Modjo, reached the top 40 across Europe, but in the US, where "Lady" only cracked the Hot 100 at No. 81, the duo is often filed as a one-hit wonder. Modjo stopped making music together in 2003.
