History

Stardust was a French house trio formed in Paris in 1998 by Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk), DJ Alan Braxe, and vocalist Benjamin Diamond. The group came together almost by accident: Braxe and Bangalter needed one more track to round out a set at the Rex Club, and the resulting song, "Music Sounds Better with You," built around a looped guitar sample from Chaka Khan's 1981 track "Fate," became their only release. Issued on Bangalter's Roulé label in July 1998, it reached number two on the UK singles chart, topped charts in Greece and Spain, hit the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart, and has sold more than two million copies worldwide, earning double platinum status in the UK. Stardust played live only once more after that Rex Club show before quietly disbanding, making it one of dance music's most celebrated one-hit wonders. Bangalter reportedly turned down a $3 million offer from Virgin Records to record a full Stardust album, choosing to keep it a single, unrepeated moment rather than build a career around it.
