History

Alexandre Laterrasse took the Alex Gopher name in the mid-1990s, coming out of the same Versailles school circle that produced Étienne de Crécy and the members of Air. He helped found Solid Records, the label around de Crécy's Super Discount project, and worked as one of its house producers. The record he is still known for arrived in 1999. The Child is built on a sample of Billie Holiday singing God Bless the Child, set over a filtered house bassline, and its animated video by the H5 studio, made entirely of moving typography, carried the track to an audience well outside dance music. The album You, My Baby & I followed the same year and moved between club tracks, disco edits and quieter instrumental pieces. Through the 2000s Gopher kept releasing records while shifting steadily into scoring for film and advertising. His filter house rests on the sampled voice rather than on the build and the drop.
