History
Mac Dre, born Andre Louis Hicks (July 5, 1970 - November 1, 2004), was an American rapper, songwriter, and producer from Vallejo, California, who became one of the most influential figures in Bay Area hip-hop. He started rapping in the mid-1980s and released his debut album, Young Black Brotha, while serving a five-year federal sentence tied to a string of Vallejo bank robberies, after refusing to inform on associates. After his release in 1996, he moved to Sacramento and founded the independent label Thizz Entertainment, through which he put out dozens of albums and helped launch other Bay Area artists. Mac Dre is widely credited as a founding figure of the hyphy movement, the fast, bass-heavy Bay Area sound and dance culture of the early 2000s, and he originated the Thizzle Dance. He collaborated with artists including Andre Nickatina, Yukmouth, Mac Mall, and Keak da Sneak. He was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman in Kansas City, Missouri, after a show in 2004; the case remains unsolved.
