History
Tupac Shakur (born Lesane Parish Crooks, June 16, 1971, in New York City; later known as 2Pac and Makaveli) grew up with his mother, Afeni Shakur, a former Black Panther, before the family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988. He entered music as a roadie and backup dancer for the group Digital Underground, debuting on their 1991 single "Same Song" before launching his solo career that same year with 2Pacalypse Now, a politically charged record that made him a central voice of West Coast hip-hop. Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... (1993) and Me Against the World (1995) followed; the latter topped the Billboard 200 while he was in prison. After signing with Suge Knight's Death Row Records, he released All Eyez on Me (1996), rap's first double album, which produced two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, "California Love" and "How Do U Want It," and later went Diamond. He formed the group Thug Life and worked with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and the Outlawz. He was fatally shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, and died six days later at 25. Having sold over 75 million records, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
