History
Killer Mike raps with a preacher's force and a Southern storyteller's detail, pairing booming Atlanta bass with verses about race, policing, class and faith. Born Michael Render and raised in Atlanta, he came up in the orbit of the Dungeon Family, the collective around OutKast and Organized Noize, and first reached a wide audience through his verse on OutKast's The Whole World, which won a Grammy. His debut album Monster carried that crunk-era energy, and a run of mixtapes and independent records built a loyal following. The turning point was R.A.P. Music, produced entirely by El-P, which set Mike's gospel-rooted delivery over dense, abrasive beats and led directly to the pair forming Run the Jewels. Decades into his career, his album Michael turned inward toward family, church and grief and won him several Grammys. Outside music he is known as an activist and as the owner of a barbershop in Atlanta. Killer Mike is known for his thunderous baritone, Southern drawl, and verses that swing between humour and fury.
