History

Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom on August 15, 1985, in Los Angeles, California, was a West Coast hip-hop rapper, entrepreneur, and community activist who emerged from the Crenshaw district in the mid-2000s. He built his following independently, self-releasing his debut mixtape Slauson Boy Volume 1 before a run of Bullets Ain't Got No Name tapes led to a deal with Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records. His 2013 mixtape Crenshaw made headlines when Jay-Z bought 100 copies at $100 each, a stunt that turned Hussle into an industry talking point years before his major-label debut. His long-awaited studio album, Victory Lap (2018), debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. Beyond music, he co-founded the All Money In label and opened the Marathon Clothing store in Crenshaw, investing heavily in local business and youth programs. He was murdered outside that store on March 31, 2019, at age 33, an event that triggered nationwide mourning.
