History

Hykeem Carter was born in Carson, California and raised largely in Las Vegas, producing most of his early material himself. Die for My Bitch (2019) carried 'orange soda' and set the pattern: short tracks, a beat switch dropped in mid-verse, a voice pitched up and squeezed thin, then falling back into a flat mutter. The Melodic Blue came out in 2021 on pgLang, the company run by Kendrick Lamar, who is his cousin and who raps on 'family ties'. That track won Best Rap Performance at the 2022 Grammys. Keem writes through repetition and sudden gear changes rather than long narrative verses, and he keeps production credits on most of what he releases, which is uncommon for a rapper who came up in the streaming era. He also worked on the production of Lamar's Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers the same year.
