History
Black Milk is a Detroit producer and rapper whose beats sit between classic sample-based boom bap and something rougher and more electronic, with drums that swing hard and synths that bite. He grew up in the city's hip-hop scene in the shadow of J Dilla, whose loose, off-grid drum programming is a clear influence, and he did early production work around Slum Village. Popular Demand (2007) introduced him as a solo artist rapping over his own soul-heavy, hard-hitting beats. Tronic (2008) pushed further toward synthesizers and electro textures, and Album of the Year (2010) brought in more live instrumentation and a darker, more personal tone. In later years he often performed and recorded with a live band, blurring the line between producer and bandleader. What gives him away is thick, saturated drums, chopped soul fragments set against analogue synths, and arrangements that change shape several times inside one track.
