History
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth (born June 17, 1987) is an American rapper and songwriter from Compton, California. He began recording as K.Dot in high school, signed to Top Dawg Entertainment in 2005, and co-founded the group Black Hippy. His debut album, Section.80 (2011), led to a joint deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (2012) became one of the longest-charting hip-hop albums on the Billboard 200, and To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) fused hip-hop with jazz, funk, and soul, starting a run of consecutive number-one albums. His fourth album, Damn (2017), made him the first musician outside classical or jazz to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, awarded in 2018. He also contributed to the Black Panther film soundtrack, earning an Academy Award nomination for "All the Stars." In 2024, his single "Not Like Us," released during a highly publicized feud with Drake, won five Grammy Awards including Song and Record of the Year. Lamar has won 27 Grammy Awards in total, the most of any rapper, and headlined the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show.
