History
Run the Jewels (RTJ) is an American hip-hop duo formed in 2013 by Brooklyn producer-rapper El-P (Jaime Meline) and Atlanta rapper Killer Mike (Michael Render), both born within a month of each other in 1975. The pairing grew out of their work together on Killer Mike's 2012 album R.A.P. Music; the chemistry led them to build a full project, with El-P naming the group after an LL Cool J lyric and stickup slang. Their self-titled debut dropped free in June 2013 through Fool's Gold Records, followed by Run the Jewels 2 (2014) and Run the Jewels 3 (2016), each blending aggressive, industrial-tinged production with politically charged, technically dense rhymes. In June 2020, the duo rushed out RTJ4 two days early, releasing it free online as protests over George Floyd's killing spread nationwide; the album became their highest-charting release and their most critically acclaimed, later earning Grammy recognition. The group has also placed music in Baby Driver and Silicon Valley.
