History
Vince Staples was born July 2, 1993, in Compton, California, and came up between Compton and Long Beach, where gang life shaped much of his teenage years. He got his start around 2010 through the Odd Future circle, befriending Syd tha Kyd and Earl Sweatshirt, appearing on Sweatshirt's breakout 2010 mixtape before releasing his own debut, Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1, in December 2011. Mac Miller produced his 2013 mixtape Stolen Youth, and Staples soon signed to Def Jam. His 2015 debut album Summertime '06 broke him nationally, and its single "Norf Norf" was later certified platinum by the RIAA. He followed with Big Fish Theory (2017), FM! (2018), Vince Staples (2021), Ramona Park Broke My Heart (2022), and Dark Times (2024), building a reputation for terse, unsentimental West Coast rap paired with avant-garde, dance and electronic production. In 2026 he released Cry Baby as his first fully independent album. Beyond music, he has acted in Dope and White Men Can't Jump, and created and starred in Netflix's The Vince Staples Show.
