History
Hellripper play blackened speed metal with a punk heart: fast, catchy riffs, thrashing drums, a gravelly shout and songs that rarely stay in one place long enough to cool down. The project is the work of James McBain from Scotland, who began it as a one-man band, writing and recording the instruments himself and assembling musicians for live shows. Its lineage runs through Venom, Motörhead, early Bathory and the speed metal of the 1980s, but with a looser, rock and roll swing. Coagulating Darkness in 2017 introduced the style, and The Affair of the Poisons in 2020, named after the poisoning scandal at the court of Louis XIV, sharpened it with stronger hooks and a fuller sound. Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags in 2023 turned toward Scottish folklore and landscape, adding some longer, more atmospheric songs without losing speed. Hellripper is recognised by the energy of its riffs, twin guitar harmonies borrowed from classic heavy metal, a raw but clear production and a wicked, playful approach to occult and historical themes.
