History

Desaster play old-school black thrash rooted firmly in the German tradition: fast, riff-driven songs with a raw sound, rasping vocals and a love of the early records by Sodom, Destruction, Kreator and Venom. The band comes from the Koblenz area in western Germany and started in the late 1980s, which makes it one of the longer-running acts in the style, with a steady catalogue built up across the 1990s and 2000s. Tyrants of the Netherworld in 2000 captured its sound in sharp form, mixing thrash speed with black metal atmosphere and moments of epic, almost heavy metal melody. Angelwhore in 2005 continued in the same vein and is often named among the band's strongest records, and Churches Without Saints in 2021 showed the formula intact decades after the band's start. Desaster have never chased trends or modern production, and that consistency is much of their reputation in the underground. Listeners recognise them by their galloping Teutonic riffs, rough, echoing production, spiteful vocals and an unapologetic devotion to 1980s metal.
