History

Deathspell Omega play black metal as dense, dissonant architecture: riffs full of clashing intervals, drumming that shifts tempo and meter without warning, and long passages that sound composed rather than jammed, with a theological weight behind every lyric. The French band has stayed deliberately anonymous, giving few interviews and no live shows, so the records carry all the attention. Early releases were raw and orthodox, close to the Norwegian second wave, but Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice (2004) opened a trilogy on the relationship between God, Satan and humanity, with choral chants and dense lyrics steeped in Christian mysticism and philosophy. Fas, Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum (2007) was more violent and chaotic, and Paracletus (2010) closed the cycle in a tighter, more focused form. Together with Blut aus Nord they made France the home of a new, cerebral kind of black metal, and their angular, dissonant riffing shaped many bands that followed. Listeners recognise them by the tangled guitars that never settle into a key and the sense of a sermon delivered through chaos.
