History
Exumer played fast, aggressive thrash metal from Wiesbaden, formed in 1985 by singer and bassist Mem V. Stein and guitarist Ray Mensh. They belonged to the second tier of the German thrash scene that was forming around bands like Kreator, Sodom and Destruction, and their sound sat closer to the precise, riff-driven American style of Slayer and the Bay Area than to the rawer noise of some of their countrymen. The debut Possessed by Fire in 1986 is the record the band is remembered for: tight, galloping riffs, sharp breaks and shouted vocals, a cult favourite among collectors of European speed metal. Rising from the Sea followed in 1987 with a different singer and a somewhat cleaner production. The band came apart around 1991, but after a one-off show at Wacken Open Air in 2001 the founders brought the name back in 2008, and Exumer has since released several new studio albums, beginning with Fire & Damnation in 2012. The sound a listener recognises is classic mid-eighties thrash: palm-muted chugging, sudden tempo shifts and short, violent solos.
