History
Helloween took the speed of German thrash and put major-key melody on top of it, and European power metal essentially starts there. The band formed in Hamburg and worked out the formula over the two Keeper of the Seven Keys albums: double-kick drumming at a gallop, twin guitars harmonising lead lines instead of trading solos, choruses sung by the whole band, and a clean high tenor where most metal of the period wanted a growl. Michael Kiske's range on those records set the standard every later singer in the style was measured against. I Want Out is the anthem, a two-guitar hook and a chorus designed for a crowd to shout back. Future World is relentlessly bright, almost cheerful, which at the time was close to heresy. Eagle Fly Free shows the other side, long, fast and technically demanding without turning into pure display. The pumpkin imagery and the humour kept the music from taking itself too seriously, and whole scenes in Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and Japan grew out of it.
