History

Babymetal put idol-pop melody and choreography on top of metal that is played straight, with no wink in the riffs. The group came out of the Japanese idol system in the early 2010s, pairing a lead singer with a clear, untrained-sounding high register against two vocalist-dancers who handle chants and shouts, all backed by a session band of serious metal players. The writing borrows from power metal gallops, djent chug, speed metal double kick and occasional dubstep drops, and none of it slows down to accommodate the vocal lines. "Gimme Chocolate!!" became the entry point for most listeners outside Japan, its cartoonish chorus sitting on a riff that would work in any thrash set. "Karate" and "Road of Resistance" show the heavier and the anthemic ends. The live show is tightly drilled, closer to a stage production than a rock gig, and it carried them onto major European and American festival bills that had never booked a Japanese act in that slot.
