History

DragonForce took power metal, a genre already fond of speed, and pushed the tempo until the music started to sound like an arcade game running out of control. Formed in London, the band built its identity on twin lead guitars trading impossibly fast runs, harmonised in thirds, with pitch-shifter and whammy effects that deliberately evoke chiptune and video game sound rather than classical technique. Underneath that, the songs are conventional in the best way: major-key choruses, double kick throughout, lyrics about fire and battle delivered clean and high. Through the Fire and Flames is the track that carried them beyond the metal audience, largely because it appeared as the hardest song in Guitar Hero III and became a challenge rather than just a single. Operation Ground and Pound and Valley of the Damned follow the same blueprint. What listeners recognise is the sheer density of notes, and the fact that the band plays it straight rather than as parody.
