History
Apocalyptica began as a group of classically trained cellists from Helsinki who arranged Metallica songs for four cellos and found that the instrument could carry metal riffs with no guitars involved at all. The first records were pure covers, played with the bow used as a percussion tool as much as a melodic one: rhythm cellos chopping out downstrokes, a lead cello taking the vocal line, the low end doing the work of a bass amp. From there the band moved into original writing, added drums, and began inviting singers from the rock and metal world onto individual tracks, which gave them songs for radio alongside the instrumental pieces. Their live sound is loud and physical, with distortion and amplification treating the cello as an electric instrument. What a listener recognises is the texture: a metal arrangement with no electric guitar anywhere in it, an attack that comes from horsehair dragged across steel strings, and melodies carrying Nordic conservatory training as much as the metal repertoire they started from.
