History
Holy Moses were one of the first German thrash metal bands, formed in Aachen in 1980, and for most of their history they were defined by Sabina Classen, one of the earliest women in metal to use a full, guttural growl instead of a clean or shrieking voice. Her delivery, low, rasping and relentless, set the band apart in a scene dominated by male vocalists and made her an early model for later extreme-metal singers. Guitarist Andy Classen wrote much of the classic material. Queen of Siam in 1986 and Finished with the Dogs in 1987 mixed fast thrash riffing with a raw, almost punk-like urgency, and The New Machine of Liechtenstein in 1989 brought sharper writing and a bigger sound. The band stopped in the mid-nineties, then Sabina revived it in 2000 and kept it going with changing lineups for more than two decades. Holy Moses played their final show in Hamburg at the end of 2023, after releasing Invisible Queen that year. A listener recognises them by that voice, and by riffs that stay close to the street-level German thrash of the eighties.
