History
Shadow of Intent play deathcore scored like a science fiction film: crushing low-tuned breakdowns and blast beats under orchestral strings, brass and choirs, with Ben Duerr's vocals switching between deep gutturals and raw high screams. The band came from Hartford, Connecticut, and began in 2013 as a studio project of Duerr and guitarist Chris Wiseman. Their name comes from a ship in the Halo video game series, and the early material followed the storylines of the Halo novels, which gave the music its sense of interstellar war. Reclaimer in 2017 made their name in the modern heavy scene, with long songs that treat the orchestra as a real part of the arrangement rather than decoration. Melancholy widened the scope, adding more melodic death metal and sweeping, sadder themes, and Elegy in 2022 pushed the technical riffing and cinematic scale further. A listener recognises them by tremolo leads that soar over orchestral swells before the whole band drops into a slow, huge breakdown.
