History

Grima play atmospheric black metal that sounds like it was recorded deep in the taiga: long, cold tremolo passages, slow melancholic builds and, unusually for the genre, the Russian bayan threaded through the riffs. The project comes from Siberia and is built around two core members, Vilhelm on vocals and guitars and Morbius on guitars, with session players filling out the live and studio lineup. Their writing leans on the wilderness as subject and texture: trees, frost, rot and night. The folk element never turns jolly, and the accordion sits inside the gloom rather than lifting it. Records such as Will of the Primordial and Rotten Garden built them a following well beyond Russia in the atmospheric black metal underground. Their sixth album, Nightside, arrived in 2025 as their first release on Napalm Records, mixing long intricate pieces with shorter, more direct songs and a vocal range from clean singing to death metal growls. A listener picks them out by that bayan and the sense of vast, snowbound distance.
