History
Gesaffelstein is the stage name of Mike Lévy, a French DJ, songwriter and record producer born 24 June 1985 in Lyon. The name is a portmanteau of the German word "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total artwork) and Albert Einstein. He began producing at sixteen and released his first EP, Modern Walk, in 2008; in 2009 he co-founded the label Zone with fellow French producer the Hacker. His 2013 debut album Aleph, built on dark, minimal techno and electro, earned him the nickname "Dark Prince of Techno." That same year he co-produced tracks on Kanye West's Yeezus, including "Black Skinhead," alongside Daft Punk and Mike Dean. His profile grew further through work with the Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams and A$AP Rocky; the Weeknd collaboration "Lost in the Fire" (2019) remains his best-known single. A third album, Gamma, followed in 2024. In 2026 he won the Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for his remix of Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra," accepting the award in his trademark black reflective mask without speaking a word.
