History
Daft Punk was a French electronic music duo formed in 1993 in Paris by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who had met as schoolboys and previously played together in the indie rock band Darlin'. Their name came from a British music journalist who dismissed Darlin's sound as "a daft punky thrash" - the duo took it as their new identity. Blending house, funk, disco, and techno, they broke through with the 1997 debut album Homework and its singles "Da Funk" and "Around the World." From 1999 onward they performed exclusively behind robot helmets and costumes, concealing their faces even at the height of their fame. The 2001 album Discovery, featuring "One More Time" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," became a global dance-pop landmark and was adapted into the animated film Interstella 5555. Their final album, Random Access Memories (2013), won five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, and its single "Get Lucky" hit the top 10 in 27 countries. In 2016 they scored their only Billboard Hot 100 number one with "Starboy," featuring the Weeknd. Daft Punk announced their split in 2021 after 28 years together.
