History
Kavinsky is the stage persona of French producer Vincent Belorgey, born in Paris's Barbès neighborhood in 1975. After working as an actor in films by friends Quentin Dupieux and Jackson Fourgeaud, he turned to music in 2005, releasing the single "Testarossa Autodrive" and the Teddy Boy EP. His sound blends French house with synthwave, built around a self-created backstory: Kavinsky is a driver who crashed his Ferrari Testarossa in 1986 and returned in 2006 as a synth-loving zombie. That fictional universe shaped EPs like 1986 and Nightcall (2010, featuring Lovefoxxx of CSS) and his 2013 debut album OutRun. His breakout came when "Nightcall" scored the opening of Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film Drive, turning him into a defining voice of the synthwave revival. A second album, Reborn, followed in 2022. In 2024 he performed "Nightcall" at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony alongside Phoenix and Angèle, sparking a new diamond-certified version of the song. Belorgey died in Paris in July 2026, aged 50.
