History
Blawan is the alias of Jamie Roberts, a producer from Barnsley in South Yorkshire who became one of the main figures in the revival of industrial techno in the 2010s. He came up through the post-dubstep scene, with an early release on Hessle Audio, and then turned toward harder, rawer techno. His 2012 track Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?, built on a pitched, menacing vocal loop and pounding drums, made his name far beyond the club underground. His sound is known for jackhammering kicks, splintered wooden percussion, distorted modular synths and short, violent breakdowns, often with warped human voices. With Pariah he formed Karenn, a hardware-only live project, and he runs the Ternesc label, which released his first album Wet Will Always Dry in 2018. The EP Dismantled into Juice followed in 2023, and SickElixir came out on XL Recordings in 2025, pushing his vocals and song forms further. A listener recognises Blawan by drums that sound physically struck, bass that grinds, and a sense of grim humour behind the noise.
