History
Exmortus fuse thrash metal with neoclassical shred: dense, fast riffing and death metal-tinged rasped vocals, broken up by long harmonised guitar duels built on arpeggios and scales that come straight from classical music. The band was formed in 2002 in Whittier, California, around guitarist and vocalist Conan, and spent its first years in the Southern California underground before "In Hatred's Flame" and "Beyond the Fall of Time" established the sound. "Slave to the Sword" on Prosthetic Records brought wider attention, helped by the band's habit of adapting Beethoven into twin-guitar arrangements, such as a thrashing take on the "Moonlight Sonata". "Ride Forth" and "The Sound of Steel" continued in the same direction, with lyrics devoted almost entirely to battle, warriors and swords, a theme that suits the martial pace of the songs. Above all, Exmortus are a guitar band: two leads locked in harmony, sweep-picked runs, galloping rhythms underneath and an unabashed love of the heroic, virtuoso side of heavy metal.
