History
Gama Bomb play thrash at the speed of the mid-1980s crossover records, with short songs, gang shouts and lyrics lifted from horror films, science fiction and pulp comics. The band came together in Newry, Northern Ireland, in 2002, formed by school friends Joe McGuigan and Philly Byrne with guitarist Luke Graham. Byrne's high, yelping delivery sits on top of tight, galloping riffs, and in the early years he often took the stage in costume, turning shows into something close to a B-movie. The debut Survival of the Fastest came out in 2005, and Citizen Brain in 2008 brought them to a wider metal audience. In 2009 Tales from the Grave in Space was given away as a free download, one of the first albums released that way by a band on a record label. They sit in the neothrash wave alongside acts like Municipal Waste and Evile, the 2000s generation that revived old thrash in the 2000s without trying to modernise it. What sets them apart is the pace, the humour and the refusal to take any of it too seriously.
