History

Suicidal Angels play aggressive, Slayer-descended thrash: tremolo-picked riffs, fast double-time drumming and shouted vocals over dark, violent themes. Guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter Nick Melissourgos started the band in Athens in 2001, and through many lineup changes he has remained its only constant member. After a run of demos and EPs in the early 2000s, the first full album Eternal Domination came out in 2007. Sanctify the Darkness in 2009 raised their profile outside Greece and placed them within the European neothrash wave of that decade. Over the following years they toured heavily across Europe and kept a steady release pace, and later albums such as Years of Aggression in 2019 held on to the same core sound while tightening the production. Their music takes little from crossover humour or retro kitsch; it stays closer to the darker side of eighties thrash. A listener knows them by the relentless tempo, the chromatic riffing and Melissourgos's harsh bark, which rarely lets up from the first track to the last.
