History

Dälek made hip-hop that sounds like it is being played inside a storm of feedback. The group came out of Newark, New Jersey, led by MC Dälek, whose slow, deliberate, deep-voiced delivery carries political and personal lyrics through production thick with distorted drones, noise and heavy beats. Critics often compared the sound to shoegaze and to My Bloody Valentine as much as to other rap groups, because the beats are buried in waves of guitar-like distortion rather than built from bright samples. From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots in 2002 and Absence in 2004 are the records most often named as the peak of that early approach, released through Ipecac Recordings, a label better known for experimental rock and metal. They also recorded with the German krautrock band Faust. After a long pause the project returned with Asphalt for Eden in 2016. A listener recognises Dälek by the density of the sound, the grinding low drones under the drums, and a calm, heavy voice speaking through the noise rather than competing with it.
