History
Little about his life is public, by design: he keeps his face out of photographs, and the biography that does exist runs through a childhood split between Washington DC and Zimbabwe, where his father taught. He runs Backwoodz Studioz, the label that has put out nearly everything he has made since History Will Absolve Me (2012). The writing is allusive and dense, dread carried by image instead of statement, and he tends to hand a whole record to a single producer. Hiding Places (2019) and Maps (2023) were built with Kenny Segal, Aethiopes (2022) with Preservation, Church (2022) with Messiah Musik. With Elucid he records as the duo Armand Hammer, whose Haram (2021) was produced by The Alchemist. Percussion is often absent altogether, leaving loops that refuse to resolve, and the voice stays low and unhurried above them. Critics have treated Aethiopes and Maps as the centre of current underground rap.
