History
Sage Francis, born Paul William Francis in Miami in 1976 and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, emerged in the late 1990s as a battle rapper before becoming one of underground hip-hop's most distinctive voices. He won the Superbowl MC Battle in Boston in 1999 and the Scribble Jam championship in Cincinnati in 2000 and 2001, building a reputation for rapid, confessional wordplay rooted in slam poetry. His 2002 debut LP Personal Journals, released on Anticon, traded machismo for raw autobiographical detail and became a touchstone of the indie rap movement; the earlier online single "Makeshift Patriot" (2001) had already spread his name widely. He also recorded as half of Non-Prophets with producer Joe Beats. In 2004 Francis became the first rap artist signed to punk label Epitaph Records, releasing A Healthy Distrust (2005) and Human the Death Dance (2007). He founded Strange Famous Records, an independent label supporting like-minded artists, and continued releasing albums including Life (2010) and Copper Gone (2014).
